Local-first & sync

mashnote is local-first: your notes live on your device and stay available even when you’re offline. Sync runs quietly in the background and never blocks your typing.

What “local-first” means

  • Every edit is saved on-device the instant you make it.
  • The app opens and works offline — no connection required.
  • Sync is an optimisation, not a requirement.

How sync works

  • Notes are synchronised per note, in the background, whenever you’re online.
  • mashnote uses a CRDT engine (Yjs), so concurrent edits merge cleanly without conflict copies.
  • Metadata (notebooks, tags, titles) syncs with server-assigned timestamps, so devices never disagree about ordering.

What syncs

  • Attachments — stored in object storage, cached locally for offline use.

  • ≤300ms cold launch, ready to type.
  • ≤100ms note open, save and switch.
  • Instant full-text search.
